The Church of St. Lorenzo was built in 1098, but was subsequently remodelled in the sixteenth century after a fire had destroyed it. It contains precious artworks, frescos, paintings and sculptures dating back to the XV and XVI centuries, while the museum of the sacristy hosts a rich collection of Byzantine, Syriac and Ligurian-Tuscan works of sacred art.
Those flocking to Portovenere will have the possibility to go for pleasant walks along the beautiful streets of the old town and the sumptuous Piazza Spallanzani which overlooks the sea. The lovers of boat excursions can reach the Cinque Terre,  Tino and Tinetto islands and the beautiful Palmaria island, which is home to the mysterious Grotta Azzurra.
