Visiting Tremiti Islands

The Tremiti Islands, the smallest municipality of Apulia but one of the most visited ones, are characterized by an enchanting landscape whose origins are linked to the legend of Diomedes. The legacy of history, nature and time is redolent nearly everywhere. The archipelago of the Tremiti Islands, the so-called  Diomed Islands, is made up of five islets featuring different patterns.
San Domino, San Nicola, Cretaccio and Caprara are situated about 12 miles off the Gargano coast;  11 miles far from them is the Pianosa island, which is completely uninhabited and almost fully submerged. The archipelago of the Tremiti Islands is easily accessible from the main coastal resorts by motorships and hydrofoils, or by helicopter from Foggia

Luxury 4-star hotels and comfortable 3-star guesthouses overlooking the crystal-clear sea, which are both surrounded by the lush vegetation of this natural oasis, are situated near the beaches of Cala delle Arene, the only sandy beach of the whole archipelago, and Cala Matano in San Domino. The hotels situated in San Domino offer guests the possibility to hire boats and discover the outstanding natural beauties of the island, such as Grotta delle Viole, Grotta del Bue Marino, Grotta delle Rondinelle and the intimate beach nestling under the so-called Barns, which can be reached by boat only. The lovers of diving will enjoy the Marine Reserve of the Tremiti Islands, which is said to be one of the most beautiful natural habitats of the Mediterranean Sea.

San Domino, also known as “paradise garden” for the numerous species of coloured flowers and the lush woods of Aleppo pines it hosts, is the largest island and hosts most hotels and tourist facilities.  San Nicola, the most densely populated one, is the historic, administrative and religious centre of the archipelago. Regarded to be an open-air museum, it cherishes the Hellenic tomb which is attributed to Diomedes and the wonderful Abbey of St. Mary, which was consecrated in 1045 and still retains its ancient medieval layout and some remains of XI-century mosaics.
Caprara, which is completely uninhabited, is the second largest island of the archipelago. It is famous for its naturalistic beauties, the fascinating rock formations hollowed out by the sea and its wild territory. Cretaccio is a rock spur which is almost fully submerged. Here is the famous Scoglio della Vecchia. Legend as it that the ghost of an old woman spinning appears on the cliff during stomry nights.
