Borgo Maggiore was mentioned for the first time in the XII century. It was originally called Mercatale, since it hosted the local street market and the most important fairs of the surrounding area. In 1879 it changed its name to Borgo Maggiore.
Many inns and wine shops were opened, where merchants met and carried out profitable transactions.
