Visiting Vibo Valentia
Vibo Valentia, a provincial capital of Calabria, rises just in the heart of the Poro Plateau, a gentle hill sloping down towards the sea which has been a strategic place for trade between the hinterland and the coast since the Greek Age. Its fascinating medieval old town nestles on the slopes of the sweet hill, the latter being topped by the impressive XI-century Castle realized by Roger of Sicily through the employment of the same materials which were once used to build ancient Greek temples. The castle is now the seat of the Statal Archaeological Museum, which cherishes precious finds dating back to the Greek, Roman and Medieval Ages.
The nearby tourist resort of Vibo Marina is scattered with high-quality services and facilities. During summer, 4-star hotels overlooking the beaches of Bivona and comfortable 3-star guesthouses provide accommodation to thousands of tourists. Not to be missed are budget hotels and inns situated in the old town and around the harbour, which are situated a short distance from the main landing places to the Aeolian Islands.
The city's past vicissitudes, which are evidenced by the finds and monuments dating back to different ages which were unearthed in the surrounding area, were recollected by sculptor Niglia, who chose these themes to decorate the bronze gate of the seventeenth-century Duomo of St. Maria Maggiore and St. Leoluca. Outstanding sixteenth-century marble sculptures embellish the interior of the enchanting sacred building. Further works of art which were once cherished by the Duomo are now displayed in the adjoining Museum of Sacred Art, which is hosted inside the former Dominican Monastery.
Sumptuous eighteenth-century palaces, the gardens of the Municipal Villa and ancient churches, such as the church of the Rosary, which cherishes precious artworks dating back to the fourteenth century, follow one another along Viale Regina Margherita and Corso Umberto I, which are the city's main arterial routes and traditional gathering places.
