Verona is a vibrant trading centre, the second biggest city in the Veneto and one of the most prosperous in northern Italy. The fourteenth-century fortress of Castelvecchio, built as a defensive bulwark, houses one of the finest art galleries in Europe. Both Venetian and Austrian occupation left indelible marks over Verona's city walls, which were constantly restored in an attempt to give the city the fascination which makes it one of the privileged cities to host international exhibitions and events.
