Idyllically set amidst seven hills, Varese's city centre is scattered with precious monuments and buildings. Its strategic geographic position has made it a traditional holiday destination for many centuries, as evidenced by the numerous aristocratic residences which were built here between the 18th and the 20th century. The most beautiful one is Palazzo Estense, the current seat of the Town Hall. It was commissioned in the XVIII century in the late Baroque style by Francesco III d'Este, who contributed to make Varese an elegant city gathering precious artistic beauties and peculiar urban patterns. Behind the palace are the wide Public Gardens, the traditional gathering place of both tourists and local inhabitants. One side of the park is dominated by Villa Mirabello, the current seat of Varese's Civic Museums which contain a rich collection of archaeological finds dating back to the prehistory of the city. Heading to Casbeno, tourists will have the possibility to admire beautiful villas surrounded by well-kept gardens, while further north they will reach the XV-century Castle of Masnago, the current seat of Varese's Civic Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.
Just in the heart of the city centre rises the Basilica of St. Vittore, which was designed by Pellegrini in the late 16th-century. Its interior cherishes interesting 17th-century paintings belonging to the school of Milan. Those interested in sacred art won't miss the opportunity to reach the Sacro Monte and visit its medieval Sanctuary of St. Maria del Monte, the latter being accessible through the charming  Chapels of the Sacro Monte. The Sanctuary cherishes outstanding 14th-century frescos, a precious altar and plenty of rich decorations. The mountain is topped by an astronomical observatory.
A short distance from the city centre are Lido di Varese, a charming resort overlooking the eastern side of Lake Varese, and the small Virginia islet, a small island which is fully carpeted with a lush vegetation and dotted with interesting prehistoric settlements. It is dominated by Villa Ponti, the current seat of the Prehistoric Museum.
