Udine, a provincial capital of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, is situated just in the heart of a fertile plain dominated by the Carnic and Julian Alps. It is a city of varied and surprising architecture: its old town is scattered with Romanesque-Gothic monuments dating back to the period when Udine was the capital of the Patriarchy of  Aquileia and Friuli's main centre, as well as with impressive Renaissance buildings which were realized in the architectural style of the nearby Venice, which ruled the surrounding area from the XV up to the XVIII century.

The gentle hill of the city centre is topped by the sixteenth-century castle, which was erected over the remains of a pre-existing building. The inner halls of the palace, which are embellished with fine decorations by Giovanni da Udine, host Udine's Civic Museums, the picture gallery and its inestimable collection of works of art, the archaeological and numismatic museum, a sound library, the Museum of the Risorgimento and plenty of proper spaces gathering temporary art exhibitions. A short distance is the Church of St. Maria di Castello, a Romanesque building which contains precious frescos dating back to the XIII century.
Situated on the slopes of the central hill, Arco Bollani, a gateway designed by  Andrea Palladio, leads to the monumental Piazza della Libertà, which is surrounded by imposing buildings, such as Palazzo del Comune, which is also known as Loggia del Lionello, built of pink stone in Venetian Gothic style by goldsmith Nicolò Lionello in 1457, the Porticato and Temple of St. Giovanni, which are surmounted by a beautiful clock tower by Giovanni da Udine (which is similar to the Venetian one commanding Piazza San Marco), and Udine's Duomo.  The church, realized in the fourteenth-century, cherishes fine Baroque decorations and important paintings by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. More of Tiepolo's work can be seen in the nearby  oratory of the Purità and  Archbishop Palace, which contain beautiful frescos realized between 1726 and 1730. Opposite Piazza della Libertà are Via Mercatovecchio and Piazza San Giacomo, the city's major gathering places.
Not to be missed are Villa Veritti, which was designed by architect Carlo Scarpa, and the modern Giovanni da Udine Theatre, which are the venue for important cultural events, festivals and concerts.
