Trieste, the regional capital of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, is an atmospheric city tucked up next to Slovenia.  South of the city, the river Ospo marks the boundary with Northern Istria. Once past the railway station is the beautiful nineteenth-century residence of Habsburg Archduke Maximilian, the brother of Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph, who commissioned architect C. Junker the building of the Castle of Miramare. A visit to its inner rooms give tourists the possibility to admire fine furnishings and sumptuous decorations.
