Visiting Treviso
The lovely fortified city of Treviso, a provincial capital of the Veneto, has its own very distinctive character. Its charming old town abounds in Medieval and Renaissance monuments which were built according to both Venetian and Nordic styles. Despite comparisons with Venice for the numerous channels which cross its city centre, it is an appreciated holiday destination for people looking for a relaxing stay in a quiet and welcoming environment.
The hotels situated in the old town are small, welcoming and well-equipped. 3-star guesthouses and beautiful 4-star hotels overlooking the main channels are provided with every comfort. People looking for a relaxing holiday to regenerate both body and mind can choose among a wide range of hotels provided with beauty centre, while cheap guesthouses provided with restaurant offer traditional cooking at reasonable prices.
Walking down Piazza dei Signori and the narrow streets of the city centre, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the city, which partially lies in its monuments and historic buildings and partially in its charming houses decorated in a mountain style, its arcades, the small waterways which cross the city centre and the clear sky which often characterizes the Veneto.
The city develops around the Medieval Piazza dei Signori, which is surrounded by many important buildings and palaces. The beautiful Palazzo del Trecento, also called Palazzo della Ragione since it hosts the meetings of the members of the Maggior Consiglio, dates back to the thirteenth century and boasts a charming arcade decorated with triple lancet windows which was concluded in 1500 with a monumental loggia. The fifteenth-century Palazzo di Podestà, dominated by the Municipal Tower, is placed side by side and is the seat of the prefecture. The ancient Palazzo Pretorio is situated west in the same square.
Treviso's religious buildings date back to the XIII century, when the city was a free municipality. Not to be missed is the Church of St. Francesco. The interior has a single nave and five chapels. On the walls are frescos attributed to Tommaso da Modena and some thirteenth-century Byzantine artists.
The Church of St. Nicolò, a mixture of thirteenth-century Venetian Romanesque and French Gothic elements, is the most impressive church in the surrounding area. It houses important frescos by Tommaso da Modena and Lorenzo Lotto.
The Renaissance Cathedral, built in the late Roman era, cherishes an inestimable artistic heritage including an altar-piece by Titian, frescos by Pordenone and Medieval sculptures dating back to the XII century. After numerous restorations, only the gate remains of the originary Roman edifice.
The Municipal Art Gallery hosts artworks dating back to the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth century realized by famous artists who lived and worked in Northern Italy.
To relax while visiting the city, stop at a bar in Piazza Rinaldi or at one of the small inns situated in the Latin Quarter to have a Spritz, the traditional appetizer from the Veneto. The charming shops situated in the Latin Quarter give tourists the possibility to buy original souvenirs, such as blown glass manufactured items from the nearby Murano and pieces of chinaware and pottery.
Among the most appreciated local staples are the famous red radicchio, risi e bisi (rice and peas) and tiramisù, as well as Prosecco and Cabernet wines.
