Visiting Sappada
Sappada, situated in the province of Belluno, is a renowned winter resort surrounded by the Dolomites and crossed by the river Piave. The city centre is situated 1250 metres above sea level and is tucked up against Veneto, Friuli and Austria.
Although tourism is its main economic resource, the city still retains ancient traditions and was able to protect its unspoiled natural beauties better than any other Venetian winter resort did.
To spend a holiday at welcoming 3-star guesthouses situated in the city centre or at panoramic 4-star hotels overlooking the Dolomites gives both the lovers of skiing and winter sports and people looking for mountain air and traditional specialities the possibility to enjoy both relax and fun opportunities. The hotels situated near the slopes allow tourists to reach them in a little while, whereas the accommodation facilities situated in the old town and the hotels provided with beauty centre are hosted inside traditional wooden huts.
Hotels provided with proper shelters for skis and ski boots are the ideal solution for skiers looking for a safe place to store their equipment.
Majestic mountaintops form the backdrop to every town and village, covered in snow during winter and carpeted with green meadows and exquisite alpine plants in summer.
Winter in Sappada revolves around the snow; the resort hosts 20 kilometres of slopes which are designed to suit the needs of skiers and snowboarders and 20 kilometres of trails dedicated to cross-country skiing, as well as modern ski-lift facilities and free ski buses connecting the various resorts. Sappada also boasts three ice-skating rinks, Nevelandia, a winter theme park, snowmobiles for hire and icy rocks to train before performing difficult climbings .
The cool summers Sappada features attract visitors who want to go for outstanding walks across rugged mountain footpaths, take part in mountain excursions under the supervision of skilled guides, ride or cycle. The city centre hosts a wide range of sports facilities to play football, volleyball, tennis or go swimming, while the lovers of sports fishing can head to the beautiful Lake Ziegel Hutte, easily accessible on foot.
Not to be missed is the charming landscape which surrounds the path leading to the source of the river Piave, nestling at the foot of Mount Peralba, as well as the excursion to the Orrido dell’Acquatona, a 50-metre-deep gorge hollowed out by the river Acquatona where flowing into the river Piave.
Walking down the village of Sappada Vecchia, well-preserved ancient wooden houses are worthy of note. The most important one is the House-museum of the peasant society, which can be visited during summer.
