Visiting Rovigo
Rovigo stands on the low ground known as Polesine which extends between the rivers Adige and Po, the latter flowing into the Adriatic Sea just in the province of Rovigo. Although characterized by modern patterns, the city still retains Venetian evidences dating back to the period when the Serenissima took the place and retained possession of it by the peace of 1484.
Rovigo hosts a wide variety of accommodation facilities ranging from 3-star hotels situated near the city centre to fine and elegant 4-star hotels designed to host both tourists and business travellers looking for utmost comfort. Numerous cheap guesthouses give people the opportunity to visit the city at reasonable prices. Many hotels in Rovigo provide guests information and assistance to make wonderful excursions in the Park of the Po Delta. The hotels situated in Rovigo and in its neighbourhoods make the ideal base for making outstanding excursions in the area of the Polesine Villas.
A city of ancient origins, it experienced both Etruscan and Roman domination; it became a formal possession of the d'Este family, who governed Ferrara until Venice took the place by siege and retained possession of it till the French Revolution. During this period, the city was embellished with Renaissance and Baroque buildings and monuments. The city's most representative landmark is its Cathedral, which was built between the late 1600 and the mid 1700 over ancient Medieval foundations.
The heart of city life and Rovigo's most lively spot, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele hosts a column dominated by a lion statue, the Town Hall, with its sixteenth-century portico, the eighteenth-century Clock Tower, Palazzo Roverella, which was built in 1400 and subsequently restored, Palazzo Roncale, which dates back to the mid 16th century, and Palazzo dell’Accademia dei Concordi, which houses the beautiful Concordi Art Gallery. The lovers of history won't miss the opportunity to visit the Municipal Museum of the Polesine Civilisation, which offers deep insight into the Villanovian and Roman Ages and contains pieces of pottery which were discovered in the surrounding area.
A stroll along Piazza Matteotti or the nearby public garden, situated where the eleventh-century Castle of Rovigo stood, gives people the opportunity to relax a short distance from the city centre. Not to be missed are the ruins of the Castle, of which only two leaning towers, the impressive and embattled Donà Tower and Mozzata Towers, remain.
To visit Rovigo and the surrounding Polesine area gives people the possibility to admire fine aristocratic residences dating back to the early ‘500, when the area enjoyed great prosperity for about three centuries. Such a period is known as the “phenomenon” of the Polesine Villas, due to the high number of aristocratic residences commissioned by rich Venetians and Emilians along the banks of the river Po. The Polesine Villas give tourists the possibility to admire the wonderful architectural patterns these villas, most of which are accessible by water only, boast. Outstanding sceneries and charming landscapes provide these villas a fascinating background. Not to be missed is the Classic Villa Badoer, called La Badoera, designed in ‘500 by the famous architect Andrea Palladio and situated in Fratta Polesine, few kilometres far from Rovigo.
The territory surrounding Rovigo is punctuated with sumptuous stately homes and characterized by a peculiar landscape where the Park of the Po Delta gives the lovers of nature, birdwatching and sport the possibility to make wonderful excursions.
