Visiting Potenza

The regional capital of Basilicata, Potenza is situated on the top of the Apennine's ridge overlooking the valley of the river Basento. The medieval ancient core of the city is scattered with plenty of important evidences dating back to previous ages, when the city was a thriving colony of the Roman Empire.

Hotels in Potenza give tourists the possibility to visit the city and the surrounding area in the easiest possible way. Comfortable 3-star guesthouses situated in the old town give them the possibility to walk down its charming streets, while 4-star hotels feature excellent services and facilities and elegant spaces. Those looking for utmost freedom can take advantage of intimate bed and breakfasts situated just in the heart of the city centre. Budget hotels give anybody the possibility to visit the city and its major attractions, as well as the whole of the surrounding territory.

The central long and narrow Piazza Matteotti, situated just in the heart of the old town, connects the centre with Potenza's major sights. Via Pretoria, the major arterial route of the city, crosses the old town east to west, thus connecting its two sides, and is Potenza's most important shopping avenue.
A short distance from it is the Duomo, which was rebuilt in '700 over a previous thirteenth-century building and still features an outstanding front rose window and apse. The courtyard of the adjoining bishop's palace cherishes a Roman sarcophagus embellished by strigil decorations.
Via Pretoria leads to Piazza M. Pagano, where the main public buildings and the Church of St. Francis are situated inside a fascinating niche. The thirteenth-century church is embellished by precious architectural patterns dating back to more recent ages, such as the  XV-century bell tower and entrance gate. A short distance from it is the small Romanesque church of St. Michele, which dates back to the thirteenth-century.
Guevara Tower is the last remnant of Potenza's ancient medieval castle and is named after the homonymous family who ruled  the city for several centuries. The lovers of history and art won't miss the opportunity to visit "Dinu Adamesteanu” National Archaeological Museum of Basilicata, which is hosted inside Palazzo Loffredo and displays a rich collection of important finds and evidences which are distributed over two floors and exhibited according to their origin.
The Roman Villa of Malvaccaro cherishes outstanding mosaics too.
Not to be missed are traditional specialities from Potenza. They include spicy cold pork meat, such as the tasty “luganega”, homemade pasta, such as “srascinati”, and both lamb and kid meat, which are cooked together with their offal, such as “gnumiriddu” and“cutturiddi”. They go well with fine local wines, such as Aglianico, Malvasia di Rapolla and sweet Moscato. Not to be missed is the most appreciated local staple of the region, the famous amaro Lucano.
Folk festivals and celebrations liven up the city all year round, such as Good Friday, when plenty of people parade through the streets in period costumes, and the Festival of St. Gerardo, which takes place on May 29 and 30 to celebrate the city's patron saint with the famous “Parade of the Turkish”.
