Visiting Porto Cesareo
Porto Cesareo, situated in the province of Lecce, is a popular seaside resort overlooking the Ionian Sea. Apart from tourism, fishing is the main resource of the whole of the surrounding area.
The pride of Porto Cesareo is its thriving harbour situated just in the heart of the coastal area.
In summer, thousands of tourists are attracted by its beguiling sea, 17-kilometre-long well-groomed beaches, excellent tourist services and modern accommodation facilities which are able to suit even their most demanding requirements. Porto Cesareo gathers luxury 4-star hotels overlooking the sea, small family-run guesthouses, comfortable 3-star hotels, intimate bed and breakfasts, quiet vacation homes situated near the beach, budget hotels and cheap campsites, the latter being the ideal accommodation facilities for the lovers of open-air holidays.
The lovers of nature will have the opportunity to visit outstanding undersea oases and the charming archipelago gathering small islets populated by rare species of animals and plants. The most important historical evidences of the city are situated halfway between the beach and the sea; the Ioanian-Salentine coast is scattered with ancient towers, which were erected between ‘500 and ‘600 to resist the Saracen attacks. Between 1568 and 1570 four towers were erected; three of them still dominate the surrounding landscape: Torre Lapillo, Torre Chianca and Torre Cesarea. The most famous one is Torre Cesarea, realized by Virgilio Pugliese and designed by Giovanni Tommaso Scala in 1570. The original impressive tuff structure was destroyed and then built again fifty years later. Torre Chianca became famous all over the world when seven marble columns dating back to the II century B.C. were unearthed just in front of it, thus bearing witness to the period where the surrounding area was occupied by an important Roman port.
