Visiting Pordenone
Pordenone, a provincial capital of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, is situated a short distance from the Veneto. Its well-preserved ancient core and the inestimable artistic heritage of its churches, museums and ancient buildings, which cherish frescos and paintings by its most illustrious citizen, Giovanni Antonio de Sacchis called Pordenone, make it an appreciated holiday destination. All year round, plenty of absorbing events attract large numbers of visitors: the famous cultural review Pordenone Legge, the Book Festival which takes place in September, the so-called Days of Silent Films in October and plenty of trade fairs, crafts fairs and important displays and exhibitions make Pordenone a thriving commercial and industrial centre.
3-star guesthouses, budget hotels and luxury 4-star hotels propose affordable packages which give tourists the possibility to stay in the city centre on the occasion of the most important exhibitions, trade fairs and events. A short distance from the city centre are charming holiday farms and intimate bed and breakfasts which are open all year round.
Old Pordenone consists of one long street, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, lined with pretty arcaded houses of pink brick and imposing medieval, Renaissance and Baroque buildings, some with the faded traces of decorative frescos on their facades, such as Palazzo Mantica (number 52), whose frescos were attributed to Pordenone. Palazzo Ricchieri (number 51) hosts Pordenone's Civic Museum, which gathers outstanding collections of ancient, medieval and Renaissance art and a special section dedicated to modern and contemporary art. The 13th-century Gothic Palazzo Comunale forms a striking conclusion to the street with its eccentrically shaped roofline of curves and minaretlike side towers. Around the corner stands the Duomo of St. Marco, which was built in the XIV century and whose interior contains the lovely altar painting of the Madonna della Misericordia and the fresco of St. Rocco, which were both realized by Pordenone in the early sixteenth century.
Not to be missed are the Museum of Natural History in Piazza Giustiniano, the former church of St. Francesco and its beautiful cloister, which are now the seat of important displays and exhibitions, and the nearby village of Torre, which cherishes the remains of the first Roman settlement which was estalished here.
