Visiting Mantova
Mantova, a provincial capital of Lombardy, is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. Illustrious personalities left their mark on the art, history and culture of the city, thus giving it utmost profusion and fascination. Mantegna, Leon Battista Alberti, Pisanello and further artists contributed to make this small Lombard town, which has been famous since ancient times as the birthplace of the poet Virgil, an appreciated holiday destination. Today, it is a striking place of fine squares and aristocratic architecture.
Accommodation facilities in Mantova are able to suit even tourists' most demanding requirements. The city centre is scattered with luxury 4-star hotels and comfortable 3-star guesthouses, as well as with intimate bed and breakfasts and budget hotels, while the hinterland and the banks of the river Mincio are punctuated with charming holiday farms.
Walking down the streets of the old town, it is possible to admire precious masterpieces realized by internationally renowned artists. Mantova is a chequerboard of medieval, Renaissance and Neoclassical buildings where present and past merge in pleasant harmony thus creating utmost profusion.
Piazza delle Erbe is dominated by Palazzo del Broletto, Palazzo della Ragione and the Romanesque Rotonda di San Lorenzo, while the nearby cobbled Piazza Sordello is commanded by the Castle of San Giorgio. On one side of the same square is the medieval Duomo, which was remodelled in the ‘500 by architect and painter Giulio Romano.
Some of the most appealing buildings of the city centre were commissioned by the Gonzaga family, who ruled the city starting from the XV century. The highlight of Mantova is the Ducal Palace, the vast home of the Gonzaga family, which gathers frescos, tapestries and fine art collections realized by important Italian artists. At the other end of the town stands the early 16th-century Palazzo Te, built by Giulio Romano for the Gonzaga family. Here the artworks conspire with the architecture to produce striking effects. The building now hosts the rich art collection of the Civic Museum.
Not to be missed are the Baroque Palazzo Valenti Gonzaga and Palazzo Sordi, the Neoclassical Palazzo D’Arco, which contains a rich collection of artworks, books and scientific instruments, and the 16th-century Palazzo San Sebastiano, the current seat of the City Museum which is situated a short distance from the homonymous church realized by Leon Battista Alberti. Alberti also largerly designed the Basilica of St. Andrea, an enchanting Renaissance building which was completed in the 18th-century with a dome by Iuvarra. A chapel of the church cherishes the mortal remains of the popular painter Mantegna.
Not to be missed is the tour to the residences of the illustrious artists of the city, such as the Native House of Mantegna in Via Acerbi and the Residence of Giulio Romano in via Poma. The city's theatrical connections are enhanced by Bibiena Theatre, a Baroque masterpiece by Antonio Bibiena situated in via Accademia 47.
Gourmets will have the possibility to taste traditional specialities from Mantova in the typical restaurants of the city centre, which serve boiled meats, pumpkin-filled tortelli, tasty frittatas based on frogs and onion and the mouth-watering sbrisolona cake, which has recently been listed among the D.O.P. products of the city.
