Visiting Lodi

Founded by the Celts and subsequently rebuilt during the Middle Ages, Lodi offers visitors an incredible historic-artistic heritage. Situated on the right banks of the river Adda, it is scattered with lush green areas and charming footpaths which give tourists the possibility to spend pleasant holidays here while enjoying utmost relax.

The city is scattered with a remarkably wide array of accommodation facilities which are able to suit even tourists' most demanding requirements: it gathers comfortable 3-star guesthouses situated in the old town, luxury 4-star hotels, budget hotels which give guests the possibility to spend pleasant holidays here at reasonable prices and intimate bed and breakfasts.

This is a charming medieval town of pastel-coloured houses, pretty courtyards and lush gardens. The hotels of the old town are situated a short distance from the city's major highlights and attractions. The arcaded Piazza della Vittoria, the heart of city life, is dominated by Lodi's Duomo. The Cathedral, which is dedicated to Virgin Assunta, was erected in the XII century, as evidenced by its entrance gate, sides and apse, but was subsequently rebuilt in the Gothic and Renaissance style during the following centuries. The interior is embellished by fine frescos and paintings. Next to the Duomo is the ancient XIII-century Town Hall; from here, a narrow medieval street leads to the Civic Temple of Beata Vergine Incoronata, the so-called Sanctuary of the Incoronata, one of the most representative examples of the Renaissance style from Lombardy. The magnificent octagonal interior is entirely decorated with wall paintings and gilding which were realized by important Lombard artists between '400 and '800, and is crowned with a dome. Not to be missed are the original Church of St. Francesco, which features an impressive terracotta-tiled facade,  the ancient Church of St. Lorenzo, whose interior cherishes precious artworks and two frescos realized by Callisto Piazza, the Baroque Church of St. Maria Maddalena, which is idyllically situated along the banks of the river Adda, and the elegant Rococo Church of St. Filippo Neri, which rises next to Lodi's Civic Museum.
Lodi also hosts the modern Business Centre of the Banca Popolare di Lodi,  a 3,000-square-metre-large complex  designed by the popular architect Renzo Piano which gathers an auditorium and plenty of bars and shops, as well as the impressive remains of the Visconti Castle and its imposing tower, which has recently turned into the symbol of the city. Situated in a privileged panoramic position over Piazza Castello, it is connected  with the Park of the Carolina Island and the public gardens of Viale IV Novembre.
During their leisure time, tourists can go for pleasant walks along Lungo Adda Bonaparte or across the Wood of  Belgiardino and the Forest of Pianura. Shopping lovers won't miss the opportunity to stroll along Corso Roma, one of Lodi's major shopping avenues, while those looking for original souvenirs can buy curious items made of local ceramic, which is known all over Italy as a famous DOC product.
