Visiting Lecco
A charming resort overlooking Lake Como, Lecco is the fascinating provincial capital of Lombardy which once provided the backdrop for the famous romance by Manzoni, “I Promessi Sposi” (The Betrothed).
A small centre of medieval origin, the city offers tourists flocking to the eastern side of the enchanting Lake Como fascinating spots and utmost profusion.
Accommodation facilities are able to suit even tourists' most demanding requirements: they city gathers luxury 4-star hotels, comfortable 3-star guesthouses, budget hotels and intimate bed and breakfasts situated a short distance from the lake.
The lake is dominated by the impressive Duomo of St. Nicolò, which was realized in the XIII century but subsequently remodelled, as evidenced by its Neoclassical facade and the neo-Gothic bell tower which was erected over the remains of an ancient medieval tower. Only the chapel of the Baptistry withstood, and still retains its original frescos. Via Bovara, situated a short distance from the Duomo, is scattered with interesting ancient buildings, such as the Palace of the Spanish Governor, the current seat of the Civic Library, and the remains of the impressive city walls which were once commissioned by the Visconti family. The lakeside promenade leads to Piazza XX Settembre, which is dominated by the XIV-century Visconti Tower, the current seat of the Civic Museum of the Risorgimento and Resistance.
Piazza Manzoni, situated just in the heart of the city centre, leads to the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Vittoria, which was built in the past century and still cherishes important artworks by Lombard artists of the Cinquecento. The so-called Castello District hosts Palazzo Belgioioso, the current seat of Lecco's Civic Museums, the latter being divided into distinct sections dealing with natural sciences and archaeology. A short distance from it are the Church of St. Carlo, the ancient Church of St. Gervaso and Protasio, which cherishes outstanding 15th-century frescos, and the 18th-century Palazzo Secchi.
Apart from enjoying utmost peace and tranquillity, tourists will have the opportunity to take part in charming boat excursions or perform challenging winter sports in the nearby foothills of the Alps, such as climbing, trekking and skiing, while taking advantage of modern facilities and well-equipped slopes.
Lecco also gathers the so-called Manzoni itineraries, which develop across the city and the surrounding area. Not to be missed are the Monastery of Pescarenico, where Padre Cristoforo spent his life, the place which hosted the Palace of Don Rodrigo and the remains of the Castle of the Innominato, an impressive fortress situated in the Chiuso District. Only impressive ruins remain, but the underlying village still retains the medieval layout described by Manzoni. The city centre hosts the popular Villa Manzoni, the writer's residence which still cherishes interesting memorabilia. The same building also hosts the Municipal Art Gallery, which displays a rich collection of paitings realized between the XVII century and the present days.
