Lamezia Terme, situated in the province of Catanzaro, is an important city of Calabria, since it hosts the major airport of the region and  boasts excellent rail connections with the rest of the region. Furthermore, it is an appreciated holiday destination all year round; tourists are attracted by its 8-kilometre-long coastline overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea which nestles inside the Gulf of Santa Eufemia and the charming spa establishment which was inaugurated around the popular Spas of Caronte, whose beneficial effects have been appreciated since the Roman times.

Founded in 1968 after the merging of the municipalities of Nicastro, Sant’Eufemia, Lamezia and Sambiase, Lamezia Terme occupies a vast territory which has been inhabited since the period of Magna Graecia, even if evidences of previous settlements began to be collected in the Middle Ages. In Nicastro, a former independent municipality which is now part of Lamezia Terme, the Norman Castle dominates the hill around which the city's major urban settlement has recently developed.
Sambiase district, the most traditional part of the city, is surrounded by lush vines and ancient olive groves which produce DOP Oil Lametia and fine local wines, and is scattered with impressive monuments and ancient city walls. Piazza Diaz, Lamezia Terme's largest square, is the heart of the quarter and the place where folk festivals, fairs and concerts are regularly organized. Piazza Diaz leads to Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the major arterial route of Lamezia Terme's old town which is flanked by outstanding palaces and churches. Sambiase quarter also includes the popular Spas of Caronte, precious springs of sulphur waters and mud baths whose beneficial properties have been known since the II century AD. They are now the seat of a modern spa establishment which is open from spring up to late autumn.
During summer, visitors are attracted by the modern services and facilities and the warm hospitality offered by the quarter of Sant’Eufemia, which overlooks the homonymous gulf. It lies on the flat area of the city, which also hosts the railway station and the airport. Not to be missed are the remains of the Norman Abbey of St. Eufemia and the so-called Malta's Rampart in Gizzeria Lido, a rectangular tower which was built in 1550 as a defensive bulwark against the pirate attacks.
