A small provincial capital of Molise, Isernia rises just in the heart of the ancient region of Pentria, and is situated in a privileged panoramic position 450 metres above sea level between the rivers Sordo and Càrpino. Not to be missed is Fontana della Fraterna, which was realized in 1244 and is made up of 6 round arches and small columns decorated with enchanting capitals.
The Civic Museum gathers both Samnite and Roman (both Republican and Imperial) evidences, and also features a special section dedicated to the Palaeolithic finds which were unearthed in the so-called area of “La Pineta”. In 1979, a large settlement dating back to 1 milllion years ago was unearthed here, and is currently listed among the most important archaeological sites cherishing Palaeolithic finds.
