Gorizia, a provincial capital of Friuli-Venezia Giulia bordering Slovenia, was at the centre of fierce fighting during both world wars, but still retains thriving cultural traditions since it stands out as the point of contact between Italian and Mitteleuropean culture.
Habsburg aristocrats called it the “Nice of the Adriatic Sea” due to its mild climate and elegance; lush parks overlooking the river, well-kept gardens, interesting museums and lively cultural activities still make it an appreciated holiday destination.

Comfortable 3-star guesthouses and luxury 4-star hotels are situated just in the heart of the city centre, close to the major tourist highlights, while bike hotels, holiday farms and budget hotels rise a short distance from the old town, along the historical itineraries of the Carso and the naturalistic footpaths flanking the mounth of the river Isonzo. Traditional specialities from Goriza attract large numbers of gourmets, who will have the opportunity to stay at comfortable hotels provided with restaurant which serve the famous sweet gnocchi, prune damplings sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon, fresh radicchio, the delicious sweet ham from Cormòns and plenty of further delicacies accompanied by fine wines produced in the Collio hills.

The tour of the city could start from Borgo Castello, Gorizia's medieval core which is surrounded by 16th-century fortifications and dominated by the impressive Castle, which gazes across the countryside from on high. The polygonal city walls comprise medieval palaces and ancient buildings which are now the seat of Gorizia's Museum of the History of Art and the Archaeological Collection, the Museum of Fashion and Applied Arts, the Museum of the Great War and further exhibition spaces dedicated to contemporary art. A short distance from the Castle is the Gothic church of St. Spirito, which was erected in 1398. The Castle was erected in the XII century, but has been altered many times since. A visit to the inner rooms gives tourists the possibility to admire fine furnishings and precious paintings dating back to the XVI and XVII centuries.
The remaining part of the city is characterized by lush green areas, such as the beautiful Piuma Park overlooking the river Isonzo, the latter being flanked by the Regional Natural Reserve of the Mouth of the River Isonzo and its visitor centre and naturalistic observatories, and the Park of Palazzo Coronini Cronbergh, surrounded by rare species of trees from all over the world.  Not to be missed are the Duomo, which was realized in the ‘300, the nearby Church of St. Ignazio, an impressive Baroque building which dominates Piazza della Vittoria, and the eighteenth-century Palazzo Attems Petzenstein,  the seat of the Picture Gallery and the Provincial Museums, the latter cherishing outstanding works of art.
