Visiting Gagliano del Capo

The small municipality of Gagliano del Capo, situated in the province of Lecce, rises on the top of the so-called Serra dei Cianci hill, which is populated by rare species of animals, carpeted with ancient olive groves and Mediterranean scrub and punctuated with ancient houses and low walls. Part of the municipal territory overlooks the Adriatic Coast for almost 9 kilometres. Not to be missed is the fascinating hamlet of Ciolo, which hosts a famous 40-metre-high suspension bridge.

Both the old town and the coastal area of Gagliano del Capo are scattered with a remarkably wide array of accommodation facilities which are able to welcome tourists from all over the world both in spring and in autumn. Both luxury 4-star hotels and 3-star guesthouses in Gagliano del Capo are mostly situated along the sea front. Inns and budget hotels are situated both in the hinterland and along the sea front. Ancient farms, aristocratic residences and so-called "paiare", trulli-shaped buildings, have recently been turned into comfortable holiday farms and bed and breakfasts.

The ancient village cherishes many impressive religious buildings, such as the so-called Chiesa Madre, dedicated to the patron saint, St. Rocco. It was built in 1574 through the employment of the local "carparo" stone, which is similar to the traditional stone from Lecce but coarse-grained and porous. The elegance of the outer structure is complemented by fine inner decorations, such as Baroque altars and precious paintings realized by important painters from the Salentine Peninsula between the XVII and the XVIII century.
The building situated next to Chiesa Madre, which is now used as an oratory, dates back to 1900 and was built as a private residence over the ruins of the ancient baronial castle and its tower. It was the native house of the famous painter Vincenzo Ciardo from the Salentine Peninsula, an internationally renowned painter who is famous for its neo-Impressionist paintings depicting the Salentine Peninsula.
Not to be missed is the nearby Chapel of Madonna Immacolata, erected in 1860 through the employment of local tuff from the caves of Giuliano in Lecce, which hosts a wonderful statue of the Virgin realized in local stone from Lecce, an ancient organ and a beautiful mosaic floor.
