Visiting Frascati
Frascati is one of the most appreciated hill-towns in the neighbourhoods of Rome. Part of the area of Castelli Romani (Roman Castles), the city abounds in interesting spots, Renaissance residences and traditional inns where it is possible to taste the renowned
Frascati DOC white wine. Frascati is a privileged holiday destination to spend relaxing days enjoying its mild climate and the ancient rural traditions it retains especially during harvest, when all districts are pervaded with the heady scent of marc.
To stay at the welcoming hotels situated in the old town or the charming 3-star guesthouses which are hosted inside the ancient buildings overlooking the typical narrow streets of the city gives guests the opportunity to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere the city is pervaded with. From the luxury panoramic 4-star hotels it is possible to enjoy an enchanting view over both the nearby Roman Hills and Rome's city lights.
The numerous panoramic terraces the city boasts give tourists the possibility to enjoy breathtaking views over its vineyard-clad valleys and the nearby city of Rome, while special sightseeing tours lead them to the wonderful Tusculan villas. Built between the sixteenth and seventeenth century by Popes, Cardinals and Roman nobles to glorify Roman aristocracy, they were used to carry out social activities and bear witness to the artistic and architectural culture which characterized that Age.
Among the most appreciated ones is Villa Belvedere, which is situated just in the heart of the city and dominates Piazza Marconi. Built in the early seventeenth century by Giacomo Della Porta, it is characterized by enchanting water fountains, carved cliffs, sculptures and architectural patterns and hosts outstanding frescos by Taddeo and Federico Zuccari, Domenichino and Cesari. Goethe stayed there in 1787. Villa Lancellotti, which hosts outstanding frescos by Annibale Carracci, is surrounded by a beautiful garden. A part of it, called Ombrellino, is now a public park. Villa Tuscolana or Ruffinella, built by Luigi Vanvitelli, one of the major eighteenth-century architects, is the highest villa on the hill above the town of Frascati.
Not to be missed are the numerous churches built between the sixteenth and seventeenth century, such as the Cathedral of St. Peter, whose Baroque facade withstood the bombing of the Second World War, the Church of Gesù, which cherishes frescos by Andrea Pozzi and an interesting facade by Pietro da Cortona, and the Church of the Capuchin Friars, rich in interesting finds, paintings and frescos by Pomarancio and Giulio Romano.
