Erected in 1227, the Cathedral dedicated to St. Assunta still retains its original uneven Romanesque-Gothic facade realized in Istrian stone and an impressive bell tower. The interior cherishes early Christian sarchopagi, the remains of an ancient  Roman building and the beautiful mosaic floor of the apse, the latter dating back to the V century.
Walking down the narrow streets which develop around the hill, visitors will reach Teatro dell’Aquila, an impressive eighteenth-century building which stands out as one of the most important theatres of the region. The same itinerary leads to Piazza del Popolo, one of Fermo's most representative sites which gathers fascinating buildings and elegant palaces. It is dominated by the XVI-century Apostolic Palace, the Baroque Palazzo degli Studi and Palazzo dei Priori, the current seat of Antiquarium Archaeological Museum and the Civic Picture Gallery gathering outstanding medieval and modern artworks and both majolica- and chinaware. The nearby Gothic Church of St. Domenico is flanked by an important archaeological site which cherishes the remains of ancient Roman Pools dating back  to the l century AD.
Not to be missed are the Church of St. Francesco, which is flanked by the impressive remains of ancient Roman walls, the Church of St. Agostino, whose interior cherishes outstanding frescos realized between the thirtheenth and the fifteenth century, and the Church of St. Zenone, which features an original Romanesque entrance gate dating back to 1186.
