Visiting Fermo
Fermo, a provincial capital of the Marches, cherishes a well-preserved medieval old town nestling on the slopes of the panoramic Sabulo Hill. The city's most modern area develops up to the coast, where the popular seaside resort of Lido di Fermo offers tourists plenty of excellent services and facilities.
Those flocking to Fermo will have the opportunity to choose among a remarkably wide array of accommodation options, such as comfortable 3-star guesthouses situated in the modern area and state-of-the-art 4-star hotels which are able to suit even guests' most demanding requirements. The hotels situated in the old town offer guests high-quality services and facilities a short distance from the city's major tourist highlights. Both the city centre and the sea front are scattered with intimate bed and breakfasts, charming inns and budget hotels which are open all year round.
Those flocking to Fermo during summer will have the opportunity to enjoy its two-kilometre-long beach of fine sand and shingle, the ideal place to tan and bathe a short distance from the more crowded beaches of Porto San Giorgio and Porto Sant’Elpidio. Not to be missed is Fermo's beautiful old town too.
The local hill is topped by Fermo's Duomo, which is wholly surrounded by a wide and lush garden. Erected in 1227, the Cathedral dedicated to St. Assunta still retains its original uneven Romanesque-Gothic facade realized in Istrian stone and an impressive bell tower. The interior cherishes early Christian sarchopagi, the remains of an ancient Roman building and the beautiful mosaic floor of the apse, the latter dating back to the V century.
Walking down the narrow streets which develop around the hill, visitors will reach Teatro dell’Aquila, an impressive eighteenth-century building which stands out as one of the most important theatres of the region. The same itinerary leads to Piazza del Popolo, one of Fermo's most representative sites which gathers fascinating buildings and elegant palaces. It is dominated by the XVI-century Apostolic Palace, the Baroque Palazzo degli Studi and Palazzo dei Priori, the current seat of Antiquarium Archaeological Museum and the Civic Picture Gallery gathering outstanding medieval and modern artworks and both majolica- and chinaware. The nearby Gothic Church of St. Domenico is flanked by an important archaeological site which cherishes the remains of ancient Roman Pools dating back to the l century AD.
Not to be missed are the Church of St. Francesco, which is flanked by the impressive remains of ancient Roman walls, the Church of St. Agostino, whose interior cherishes outstanding frescos realized between the thirtheenth and the fifteenth century, and the Church of St. Zenone, which features an original Romanesque entrance gate dating back to 1186.
