The EUR district in Rome was built in the late Thirties a short distance from the city boundaries, along the road which connected Piazza Venezia to the sea. It was originally built by Mussolini for an international exhibition, the Esposizione Universale di Roma (Rome Universal Exposition), E.U.R., that was planned for 1942, but never took place because of the outbreak of war. The architecture was intended to glorify Fascism, and as a result the bombastic style of the building can look overblown and rhetorical to modern eyes. Of all the buildings the best known is probably Palazzo della Civiltà del Lavoro (Palace of the Civilization of Work), known as “Colosseo Quadrato” (Square Colosseum), an unmistakable landmark for people arriving from Fiumicino airport, while the Conference Building is turning into an important gathering place thanks to the numerous congresses and contemporary art and music festivals it hosts.
