Visiting Erice
Erice, a charming medieval village situated in the province of Trapani, attracts large numbers of visitors for its fascinating panoramic position, situated on the top of the homonymous mount, its well-preserved artistic heritage and the proximity with the compelling beaches of the province of Trapani. The fairy-tale atmosphere and profusion of the city make it an appreciated holiday destination.
The ancient village hosts numerous 3-star guesthouses and 4-star hotels, which are able to suit even guests' most demanding requirements. The sea front is scattered with cheap inns and budget hotels, while the hilly landscape of Valderice gathers intimate bed and breakfasts and welcoming and well-equipped holiday farms.
Legend has it that the city experienced plenty of epic vicissitudes. The Aeneid by Virgil describes it as the place where Aeneas fought against the giant Erice, that gave both the city and the mount their name. After the building of the temple dedicated to the cult of the fertility goddess, which was erected by the Elymians and subsequently conquered by Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans, Erice became an important religious centre. The temple stood on the present site of the XII-XIII-century Norman Castle, the so-called Venus Castle, beyond Villa Balio public gardens. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Trapani and the Aegadian Islands from the castle. Erice's old town gathers imposing Norman buildings, quadrangular towers and well-preserved walls dating back to the V century BC.
The Church of Assunta, an enchanting Gothic building situated next to Porta Trapani, dates back to the following century. Walking along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, it is possible to reach the Town Hall, the current seat of Cordici Museums, the latter cherishing interesting archaeological finds, statues and paintings.
Walking down the charming paved streets of Erice's city centre, tourists will have the possibility to visit plenty of small workshops which manufacture homemade pottery and carpets, as well as to taste mouth-watering almond-based pastries in the beautiful cafés of the city centre. Those flocking to Erice during spring will have the possibility to attend the fascinating car racing during which vintage cars, prototypes and modern cars compete along the sharp U-bends which connect Valderice with Erice Monte.
Those looking for pleasant seaside holidays will have the possibility to visit the ancient fishing village of Bonagia or tan in the compelling sandy beaches of San Giuliano while admiring the impressive rocky cliffs of Pizzolungo
