Enna is the highest provincial capital of Italy. Among the most interesting spots of the old town is the huge Castle of Lombardy, an outstanding example of Medieval fortification built by the Swabians and then restructured under Frederick III of Aragon. It is one of the most impressive castles in Sicily and is characterized by the mixture of different architectural styles dating back to the Byzantine, Norman and Swabian Ages. The castle has an irregular layout and is divided into three different spaces separated by walls. It once comprised 20 towers: of the six remaining, Torre delle Aquile (Tower of the Eagles), which is also known as Torre Pisana, is the best-preserved and boasts a marvellous view over the surrounding landscape.
Walking along via Roma it is possible to reach the Cathedral, a noteworthy example of religious architecture built in the Gothic style which was then turned into a Baroque building in the XV and XVI centuries.
Few kilometres far from Enna is the small village of Calascibetta, which was founded by the Arabs in the IX century and is situated on a rock featuring numerous caves.
Not to be missed are the remains of the Roman Villa of Casale in Piazza Armerina, a small resort situated 30 kilometres far from Enna. The Roman Villa of Casale in Piazza Armerina is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. Although little remains of the building fabric, the floors have some of the finest surviving mosaics from Roman antiquity. These enchanting mosaics are said to have been realized by African peoples due to the colours, styles and techniques which remind some Northern African floors.
