Visiting Cuneo
Cuneo, a provincial capital of Piedmont, derives its name from “cuneo”, meaning wedge-shaped, which describes the sliver of land that the town occupies. The medieval old town, the so-called Cuneo Vecchia, is situated on the highest point of the city, while new districts and residential areas develop on the slopes of the plateau. The province of Cuneo is the third largest in Italy, and it is bounded by the French Alps in the west, the provinces of Turin and Asti in the north and east and Liguria in the south. Its size won it the name of Provincia Granda (Big Province).
Cuneo gathers a remarkably wide array of accommodation options which are able to suit even visitors' most demanding requirements. Comfortable 3-star guesthouses and 4-star hotels are situated along the ancient thirtheenth-century streets of the old town, and are hosted inside prestigious historic buildings situated a short distance from the major tourist highlights. The surrounding valleys are scattered with intimate holiday farms and budget hotels, which are situated at the confluence of the rivers Stura and Gesso, important waterways which cross the countryside of the province of Cuneo and make it incredibly lush and fertile. The lovers of mountain holidays can stay at comfortable hotels situated near equipped ski resorts and intimate mountain shelters.
Cuneo's old town originated from the merging of several villages, which established a free city-republic in 1198. The Church of St. Ambrogio dates back to that age, since it was erected in 1231 and subsequently renovated in the eighteenth century under the supervision of architect Francesco Gallo. Among Cuneos' few medieval evidences is the Church of St. Sebastiano, which has constantly undergone extensive renovation works, and the Gothic Church of St. Francesco. The adjoining Franciscan monastery, which was completely renovated during the last century, is now the seat of Cuneo's Civic Museum, which contains interesting historical, ethnographic and archaeological collections.
Via Roma, the city's major arterial route, hosts Cuneo's Cathedral, which is named after Nostra Signora del Bosco. The sixteenth-century building, which was subsequently rebuilt in the Neocalssical style in the nineteenth century, cherishes precious artworks dating back to the XVII and XVIII centuries. A short distance from it, the church and convent of St. Chiara are outstanding examples of Rococo buildings featuring impressive domes and richly decorated interiors. They often host important musical reviews since they feature perfect acoustics. City life revolves around Piazza Galimberti, which is surrounded by Neoclassical buildings, while the most characteristic street is Contrada Mondovì, a narrow porticoed street dating back to the Middle Ages. Walking down the streets of the ancient village, visitors will have the opportunity to taste traditional specialities from Piedmont in the numerous inns and restaurants punctuating it, which serve traditional Toma cheese, bagna caoda (a warm mix of olive oil, anchovies and garlic into which raw vegetables are dipped), white truffles from Alba, local wild mushrooms and polenta accompanied by fine local wines. Not to be missed is local grappa produced in the province of Cuneo.
