Crotone, a provincial capital of Calabria, is an ancient city overlooking the Ionian Sea and the mouth of the river Esaro. Both Eusebius' Chronicle and the numerous finds which were unearthed under the fortified medieval town bear witness to the existence of the ancient city of Kroton,  which was founded by the Achaean in 700 BC and was the first settlement of Magna Graecia, the homeland of doctors, athletes and famous philosophers and the seat of the school of Pythagoras. Scattered with impressive monuments, sumptuous palaces, medieval buildings and precious finds, Crotone's old town attracts large numbers of tourists.

Crotone's enchanting sea front has recently been renovated and now gathers state-of-the-art tourist services and facilities and a remarkably wide array of accommodation options, clubs and further attractions. Many 3-star guesthouses and 4-star hotels are situated along Cristoforo Colombo sea front, the bustling pedestrian precinct snaking along the tourist  harbour which in the evening livens up and turns into the city's main gathering place. Gramsci sea front is scattered with comfortable guesthouses and inns, while the new residential areas gather budget hotels and intimate bed and breakfasts, the latter being situated a short distance from the old town.

Crotone's coastline is the privileged holiday destination for the lovers of windsurfing, scuba diving and sailing, who are attracted by fresh breeze, beguiling sea and intimate inlets and bays.  The vast coastline is punctuated with impressive medieval towers which were built in Capo Colonne, Capo Cimiti, Capo Rizzuto and Punta Le Castella. The outstanding Marine Reserve of Capo Rizzuto gathers 40 kilometres of rocky and sandy shoal where the wreckage of ancient galleys, amphorae and blocks of marble have turned into the natural habitat of different species of fish, moray eels and octopuses.
The oldest area of the old town is dominated by the Castle of Carlo V, which dates back to 840 AD and was subsequently restored in 1541. It is now the venue for the local archaeological museum. Piazza Castello, which is wholly dominated by eighteenth-century aristocratic residences, and the surrounding narrow streets, the so called vineddri, lead to the main squares of the ancient village  Among the most beautiful artistic and historical buildings are the Duomo, which was built in the XIth century but repeatedly restored, the Church of St. Chiara, which cherishes outstanding frescos dating back to the ‘700 and an enchanting floor made of Neapolitan majolica, and the Baroque Church of St. Giuseppe, which is embellished by an outstanding entrance gate and two wooden sculptures dating back to 1600.
