Cortina d’Ampezzo benefits from better than average sports facilities thanks to hosting the 1956 Winter Olympics. In addition to downhill and cross-country skiing, there are hundred kilometres slopes and eighty descents, among which the famous Tofana one.
Equipped to welcome thousands of tourists, Cortina d’Ampezzo gathers numerous fun and entertainment possibilities. Apart from skiing and snowboarding, it is also possible to ice-skate or play hockey in the well-equipped Ice Rink, which was built to host the Olympics in 1956 and has recently been turned into an outdoor stadium. This facility gives people the possibility to hire sport equipment to ice-skate or to attend international ice-skating, curling and short-track competitions. In the neighbourhoods is the famous Trampolino Olimpico Italia, an impressive wooden building erected to host the Olympic competitions of ski jumping.

Another charming wooden building which flanks it is “La Conchiglia” (the Shell), whose name derives from its spherical and hollow shape. It hosts the main cultural and folk events, such as the concert of August 15 and the Festival of the Bands, which takes place on the last August Sunday. The symbol of the city, the bell tower named after Saints Filippo and Giacomo, is situated a short distance from here.
Modern ski-lift facilities allow guests to reach the main huts to taste delicious hot specialities. Traditional cooking is based on local staples from the Veneto, as well as Tyrolese, Austrian and Hungarian recipes, and features polenta, broad bean and barley soups, Goulasch-like meat soups, roast meat and game stew served with blueberry marmalade, Sachertorte and apple strudel.
