Como, a provincial capital of Lombardy, is situated just across the border with Switzerland, in a privileged position which has made it a strategic nerve centre since the Roman Age. Situated on the slopes of Mount Brunate, it overlooks the fascinating lake which gives it its name. Its interior cherishes a precious collection of materials and documents which belonged to the acclaimed inventor of the battery. Walking along the lakeside promenade, it is possible to reach the lively harbour situated in front of Piazza Cavour, the latter being the city's main gathering place. Walking down Via Vittorio Emanuele II, the city's major arterial route which crosses the old town, it is possible to reach Como's main buildings and the large Piazza Duomo, the heart of city life. This monumental square is dominated by the Municipal Tower, which dates back to 1215, the so-called Broletto, the former seat of the municipality featuring an impressive facade made of white, gray and red marble, and the impressive structure of the Duomo. The building of the Cathedral, which rises over a pre-existing church, lasted for over four centuries, from 1396 up to 1770. As a result, the cathedral boasts an outstanding combination of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. Not to be missed are the precious inner decorations, which gather XVI-century tapestries and paintings.
Walking along the same road it is possible to reach the Romanesque Basilica of St. Fedele, which was realized in the XII century, and the fascinating ancient Basilica of St. Abbondio, situated on the western edge of the old town. Further west is the Neoclassical Villa Olmo, which was realized in the late ‘700 and is currently the venue for interesting exhibitions, concerts and events.
The lovers of natural beauties can go for pleasant walks along the lake or make absorbing boat excursions to the famous resorts of  the surrounding area, such as Bellagio, Cernobbio, Tramezzo, Comacina Island, ancient villas and lush gardens embellished by precious statues and works of art. A dedicated cableway connects Como with Brunate and the top of the homonymous hill. Brunate's lookout point boasts breathtaking views over some of Como's most picturesque landscapes.
