Visiting Civitavecchia
Idyllically set in a privileged position overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, Civitavecchia, which is situated in the province of Rome, is the major port and sea connection to the Capital in Italy, and the second most important cruise port in the Mediterranean. Surrounded by interesting archaeological sites and ancient spa tows, over the last decades Civitavecchia has turned into an appreciated seaside resort.
The 3-star guesthouses overlooking the old town and the well-kept 4-star hotels are situated a short distance from the main sights, while cheap guesthouses and the hotels situated along the sea front, north of the city, attract both local inhabitants and foreign tourists looking for peace and well-kept beaches. Several spa hotels offer advantageous promotions all year round and give tourists the possibility to spend pleasant holidays based on total wellbeing.
Built as a Roman harbour, the ancient name of Civitavecchia, Centumcellae, derives from its indented coastline rich in coves and small gulfs (cellae). One of the main attractions in the city is Forte Michelangelo, one of the well-preserved fortresses in Italy which was built in ‘500 by Buonarroti. The harbour boasts an outstanding view over its fascinating profile, as well as over the beautiful arcade of the arsenal and the brick embattled walls commissioned by Urbano VIII, which cherish a beautiful fountain by Vanvitelli. The basin cherishes a lot of historic finds which are now hosted inside the Archaeological Museum of Civitavecchia.
Not to be missed are the ancient taurine spas, which were commissioned by Emperor Trajan to exploit a natural spring of hot sulphur water. It is still possible to admire the remains of the ancient marble lining, the Ionic capitals and further architectural patterns which bear witness to the impressive original spa establishment. A short distance from here are the so-called Ficoncella Spas, thermal pools where it is possible to spend relaxing days enjoying an outstanding view over both the coastline and the Tolfa Mountains.
North of the city, the beaches turn into wide stretches of fine sand which are very appreciated by both local inhabitants and foreign tourists. Here are the main clubs and restaurants, as well as the famous Aquafelix aqua park, the largest in Central Italy.
Just in the heart of an ancient Etruscan centre south of Civitavecchia is the Tourist Harbour Riva di Traiano, an equipped port designed to host small- and medium-sized boats.
