Visiting Caserta
Caserta, the third most important provincial capital of Campania, is located on the edge of Volturno plain at the foot of the impressive Campanian Subapennine mountain range. It is famous all over the world for its magnificently opulent eighteenth-century Palace, which was realized by architect Luigi Vanvitelli and is now listed among the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The whole of the surrounding area is scattered with impressive buildings and monuments which make it a privileged holiday destination for the lovers of both artistic and cultural beauties.
Caserta boasts a remarkably wide array of accommodation options ranging from comfortable 3-star guesthouses to luxury 4-star hotels situated in the old town, a short distance from the city's major attractions, clubs, restaurants and tourist services and facilities. Budget hotels, comfortable inns and intimate bed and breakfasts give guests the possibility to spend pleasant holidays here at reasonable prices.
The current urban area, which boasts ancient origins, develops around the former Lombard settlement and is dominated by the high Tower which is now part of Palazzo della Prefettura, the latter commanding the central Piazza Vanvitelli. However, Caserta's core, the so-called Casertavecchia, lies on the top of a sweet hill which rises about ten kilometres far from the current centre. This fascinating medieval village is a privileged holiday destination, since it offers visitors the possibility to enjoy breathtaking views over compelling natural landscapes, the remains of the ancient castle and the XII-century Duomo, where Arab, Norman and Romanesque styles merge in pleasant harmony.
Caserta's Royal Palace, which was designed by Vanvitelli in 1750 as the summer residence of Charles III King of Naples, had to be the most beautiful, imposing and opulent palace in Europe. The surrounding 2.5-kilometre-wide park is dotted with enchanting fountains, ornamental waterworks, statuary and an English Garden. The Royal Palace is now open to the general public, which can visit both the outer structure and most inner rooms.
Caserta also gathers further important highlights, such as the eighteenth-century Palazzo del Belvedere. Situated three kilometres northwest of Caserta, it is a model town commissioned by King Ferdinand IV, who also founded its silk industry. The local Museum of Silk illustrates the evolution of silk manufacturing techniques from the XVIII century up to present day.
A short distance from the Royal Palace is the Church of St. Francesco di Paola, where Vanvitelli was buried in 1773, while the monumental Piazza Carlo III leads to the lively Corso Trieste, the city's major arterial route which is scattered with plenty of shops, clubs and gathering places. Walking down the streets of the city centre, tourists will have the possibility to admire rare examples of both civic and sacred architecture. The narrow streets and nooks and crannies of both city centre and old town are peppered with Baroque, Neoclassical and Art-Nouveau palaces which were built between the sixteenth and nineteenth-century.
