Caserta, the third most important provincial capital of Campania, is located on the edge of Volturno plain at the foot of the impressive Campanian Subapennine mountain range. It is famous all over the world for its magnificently opulent eighteenth-century Palace, which was realized by architect Luigi Vanvitelli and is now listed among the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Caserta also gathers further important highlights, such as the eighteenth-century Palazzo del Belvedere. Situated three kilometres northwest of Caserta, it is a model town commissioned by King Ferdinand IV, who also founded its silk industry. The local Museum of Silk illustrates the evolution of silk manufacturing techniques from the XVIII century up to present day.
A short distance from the Royal Palace is the Church of St. Francesco di Paola, where Vanvitelli was buried in 1773, while the monumental Piazza Carlo III leads to the lively Corso Trieste, the city's major arterial route which is scattered with plenty of shops, clubs and gathering places. Walking down the streets of the city centre, tourists will have the possibility to admire rare examples of both civic and sacred architecture.
