The regional capital of Molise, Campobasso is divided into two distinct areas which are both located in the high basin of the river Bifeno and surrounded by the Matese massifs and Sannio mountains. The original core gazes across the countryside from the top of an impressive hill situated 700 metres above sea level and is dominated by the enchanting Monforte Castle, while the more recent area, which dates back to the nineteenth century, lies on the heart of the underlying plain.

Not to be missed are traditional specialities from Molise, such as white celery, tasty dishes based on lamb meat, such as Abbuoto and Pezzata, and the popular crayfish cake, which all draw inspiration from traditional cooking from both Abruzzo and Naples.
Among the most fascinating folk festivals which are held here is the traditional Procession of the Mysteries, which takes place on the occasion of the Corpus Domini when the “Mysteries” - heavy steel structures which were designed in the late ‘700 and are supported by both children and young people while performing holy scenes -  are brought across the streets of the city.
