Located just in the heart of Sicily, the ancient city of Caltanissetta lies on the slopes of Mount San Giuliano. Under the Arab rule, the name Nissa was added to the word Kalat (castle), thus giving birth to the current name of Caltanissetta.

The city centre develops around the original core and is characterized by a mixture of different architectural styles. Among the most important sights in the city is the Castle of Pietrarossa (Red Stone Castle), whose name refers to the red bricks which once covered its towers. It stands on a spur overlooking Salso valley and offers an outstanding view over the surrounding landscape. Its origins are doubtful, although it is said to have been built by the Arabs around the year 1000 and to have subsequently been settled by the Normans.
The Neoclassical Cathedral built in 1570 is dominated by two high bell towers. Inside are stuccos of great value, as well as frescos by Guglielmo Borremans. Not to be missed is the Romanesque Abbey of St. Spirito, commissioned by Norman Count Ruggero, situated few kilometres far from the city.
In the environs are the Prehistoric and Greek tombs of Mount Gibil-Gabib, from the Arab word “the mountain of death”, whose main remains are cherished by Caltanissetta's Civic Museum.
A visit to Caltanissetta gives people the possibility to taste mouth-watering local staples, characterized by a mixture of elements belonging to different cultures and civilizations. Not to be missed are the Arab cous cous, the marzipan and ricotta used to fill traditional desserts, such as the sugar-based “pupi” and mostaccioli, and delicious fish specialities, such as maccheroni with sardines and swordfish.
