The city's most representative monuments date back to the Middle Ages, the period when Brescia became a Free Municipality. Among these, the Old Duomo, also known as la Rotonda for its compact circular body, is the city's major Romanesque building. The presbytery leads to the XI-century crypt, which still retains the remains of an impressive mosaic floor belonging to the Roman spas of the I century BC. The same square also hosts the so-called Broletto, the city's Town Hall which has partially retained its original Romanesque-Gothic structure, and the New Duomo, which was realized in the 17th century and subsequently enriched with plenty of precious works of art.
A short distance from it is Piazza della Loggia, which is surrounded by Renaissance buildings which were realized when the city was ruled by Venice. Both the interior and the exterior of the elegant Palazzo della Loggia, the former Town Hall, are embellished by plenty of statues and outstanding decorations.
The lively Via Moretto, which is flanked by plenty of sumptuous Baroque buildings, is dominated by the 16th-century Church of St. Angela Merici, which cherishes precious works of art, and by Tosio Martinengo Picture Gallery, which contains a rich collection of Renaissance works by Tintoretto, Raphael, Lorenzo Lotto, Romanino and Moretto.
