The capital of the Alto Adige, Bolzano is the gateaway between the Italian-speaking Trentino and the German-speaking Alto Adige, and has a marked Tyrolean atmosphere. Situated halfway between the Mediterranean Sea and Mitteleuropa, it lies just within the valleys of the rivers Isarco and Adige, a short distance from the Brenner Pass.

Its outstanding artistic and cultural beauties and almost unspoilt natural landscapes make it a traditional holiday destination for thousands of tourists from all over the world. The old centre, Piazza Walter (also known as Piazza del Duomo), is dominated by the 15th-century Gothic Duomo, with its multicoloured mosaic-patterned roof and elaborate spire dating back to 1519. A short distance is the Gothic Dominican Church, which was repeatedly restored, whose inner Chapel of St. Giovanni hosts an outstanding frescoed cloiser painted by pupils belonging to the Giotto's school of painting based in Padua.
Not to be missed is the nearby straight and narrow Via dei Portici, which has been the commercial centre of the city for many centuries, which is flanked by beautiful shops, traditional porticoed houses dating back to the XV-XVIII century, and sumptuous Baroque buildings, such as Palazzo Mercantile, civic number 39.
The street continues to Bolzano's Civic Museum, where South Tyrolean history is introduced through domestic interiors, costumes, a picture gallery gathering precious paintings by local artists and wood carvings dating back to the XIII-XXI century.
Once past Tàlvera Bridge and Via delle Libertà, visitors will have the opportunity to reach Gries district, a former spa resort surrounded by lush gardens and vines which now hosts the imposing Benedictine Monastery, the Baroque Church of St. Agostino and the Gothic Parish Church.
Not to be missed are the impressive castles situated in the surrounding hills and across the whole Alto Adige, beautiful fortresses which gaze across the countryside from on high. Castel Roncolo, which is situated on the top of an impressive rock spur, was realized in the thirteenth century and subsequently renovated in the nineteenth century, and contains inestimable frescos dating back to the XIV-XV century.
