Bergamo, a delightful hilltop town situated just in the heart of Lombardy, is characterized by an outstanding combination of ancient sites featuring utmost profusion, fertile landscapes which are rich in natural resources and thriving industrial activities. The town is divided into two distinct parts: Bergamo Alta crowning the hill, with its cluster of attractive buildings, and the more modern Bergamo Bassa below.

Viale Vittorio Emanuele connects Bergamo Bassa with Bergamo Alta's ancient core. Surrounded by impressive bulwarks and dominated by imposing towers and belfries, it can be reached by cableway too, thus giving tourists the possibility to enjoy breathtaking views over the underlying landscape. The old town owes much of its artistic inspiration and architectural splendour to the influence of Venice. The jewel of the upper town is Piazza Vecchia, containing one of the most appealing architectural ensembles in the region. Its buildings include the tall Civic Tower and the attractive 13th-century Palazzo della Ragione, the latter featuring a large hall which was frescoed by Bramante and further important artists between the 14th- and the 15th century. The arcades of Palazzo della Ragione lead to Piazza del Duomo, the square of the Neoclassical Duomo. The square is dominated by the Colleoni Chapel, the 13th-century Romanesque basilica of St. Maria Maggiore and an attractive octagonal Baptistry. Via Colleoni leads to Piazza della Cittadella, which is the seat of the Archaeological Civic Museum and the Museum of Natural Sciences.
The modern Bergamo Bassa develops around the so-called “Sentierone”, a charming paved avenue dominated by Porta Nuova, Donizetti Theatre, the Town Hall and plenty of bustling shops and cafés. Art lovers won't miss the opportunity to visit the Picture Gallery of the Carrara Academy, situated next to St. Agostino entrance gate. The impressive Neoclassical building is home to a fine collection of works by Venetian masters and local artists, as well as masterpieces from the rest of Italy: works by Bellini, Mantegna, Antonello da Messina, Cosmè Tura, Lorenzo Lotto and Tiziano which were realized between '400 and '700.
