Visiting Belluno
Belluno, an alpine city whose name derives from the Celtic word “belo donum” (splendid hill), is a charming mountain resort dominated by the Dolomites. The tranquillity of its old town, crossed by ancient medieval streets and embellished by beautiful Venetian-style buildings, as well as its proximity with important ski resorts, make Belluno a privileged holiday destination.
Both 3-star guesthouses and luxury 4-star hotels are easily accessible by car and offer high-quality services and a warm hospitality. Many hotels in Belluno are equipped to host skiers, while hotels provided with sauna are the ideal accommodation facilities to spend regenerating holidays combining winter sports with relaxing treatments. The hotels provided with restaurant allow guests to taste traditional specialities, while the hotels situated in the city centre are situated a short distance from the main cultural and artistic sights.
The ancient city of Belluno is situated on the top of a cliff spur which rises north of the river Piave and commands a wide valley surrounded by the impressive Schiara Dolomites. This charming city is embellished by Venetian architectural patterns and colours and clusters a wide range of cultural activities and events. The central Piazza del Duomo,
which hosts the main monuments and buildings, gathers all architectural styles of the old town. Dominated by the eighteenth-century bell tower designed by Filippo Juvarra, which overlooks the underlying city and valley, the square hosts the Basilica of Belluno, the so-called Red Palace, the seat of the Town Hall, and the fifteenth-century Fountain of St. Gioatà, situated in front of the Bishop's Palace, which was erected in 1190 and is now the seat of the Auditorium.
Numerous music events, a lively dramatic season organized by the Municipal Theatre, congresses and important exhibitions hosted in the elegant Renaissance buildings, such as the beautiful Palazzo Crepadona, Palazzo De Bertoldi and the Municipal Museum
cherished by the seventeenth-century Palazzo dei Giuristi, make Belluno a privileged holiday destination for the lovers of art and culture, although its major attractions are charming landscapes and sports facilities.
A short distance from the city centre is Nevegal ski district, equipped with over 20 kilometres of slopes dedicated to Alpine skiing.
In summer, the ridges of Mounts Feltre and Serva, part of the natural heritage of the National Park of Belluno Dolomites, offer a great variety of landscapes. Valleys are carpeted with exquisite alpine plants and are populated by many species of animals, while mountaintops attract tourists who want to make beautiful excursions along targeted paths. Both outdoor and indoor tennis clubs, public swimming pools, an ice rink, an indoor stadium, a five-a-side indoor sports centre and two rugby fields are only some of the attractions which welcome tourists flocking to the mountains.
