Ascoli Piceno, the southernmost provincial capital of the Marches, is situated 20 minutes far from Ancona and the Conero Peninsula. Its beautiful old town rises on the top of an impressive rock spur overlooking the underlying landscape, which develops between the rivers Tronto and Castellano.

Among these, the octagonal  Romanesque Baptistry, the Cathedral of St. Emidio, whose crypt cherishes impressive remains bearing witness to its foundation, which took place in the V century AD, the Bishop's Palace and the Town Hall, the current seat of the rich art collection of the Municipal Art Gallery.
The traditional gathering place for both tourists and local inhabitants, the picturesque Piazza del Popolo is dominated by Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo and the Gothic Church of St. Francis. Right of the Church is the 16th-century Loggia dei Mercanti. Tourists will have the opportunity to sip a coffee at the nearby Caffè Meletti, one of the 150 historical cafés which were founded in Italy in the early 20th century, whose interior still retains original Art-nouveau furniture which are able to attract large numbers of visitors.
Not to be missed is Piazza Ventidio Basso, which is dominated by the XI-century Romanesque Church of St. Vincenzo and Anastasio and the Gothic Church of St. Pietro Martire. Piazzetta S. Pietro Martire is situated just upon the intersection of some of the most interesting streets of Ascoli Piceno's city centre, the medieval Via delle Torri and Via dei Soderini, which are both dominated by impressive towers and elegant medieval and Renaissance palaces, and Via di Solestà, which provides access to the Roman Solestà Bridge. Walking down Corso Mazzini, Ascoli Piceno's major arterial route which crosses the old town from west to east, tourists will have the opportunity to admire some of the most beautiful facades of local Renaissance palaces and the Complex of St. Agostino, a former monastery which is now the seat of the inestimable art collection of  “O.Licini Gallery of Contemporary Art”.
