Visiting Agrigento
Situated just in the heart of a rough plateau, the ancient city of Agrigento is one of the privileged holiday destinations in Sicily. The inestimable archaeological legacy cherished by the famous Valle dei Templi (Valley of the Temples) is its major attraction and bears witness to the Hellenic origins of the city. Founded in 581 B.C., the Greek Akragas was taken over by the Romans in 210 A.D. and renamed Agrigentum.
Every year, Agrigento attracts large numbers of visitors from all over the world and welcomes them in the comfortable accommodation facilities it gathers. 4-star hotels offer demanding customers the possibility to enjoy elegant bedrooms furnished with style, as well as high-quality services and utmost comfort. 3-star hotels offer guests welcoming spaces and a relaxed atmosphere. People travelling with their family can stay at comfortable family hotels, which offer children tailor-made services and facilities. Not to be missed are cheap guesthouses, which give tourists the opportunity to visit the city while taking advantage of comfortable services at reasonable prices.
Agrigento is divided into two distinct areas: the ancient town, which develops around the Valley of the Temples and is the original core of the city, and the modern medieval town,
which developed under the Byzantine and Arab rule when the ancient city declined and the new settlement was moved to the overhanging plateau.
A visit to the old town is an outstanding opportunity to enjoy the past fascination of the Hellenic – Roman settlement and the Valley of the Temples, the former being an impressive urban settlement dating back to the VI – III century B.C. featuring residences belonging to different ages and narrow streets provided with wells, cisterns, sewerage systems and drains.
Here is the Regional Archaeological Museum, which is rich in inestimable historical finds and works of art.
The main attraction is the Valley of the Temples, which cherishes the remains of many Hellenic temples, such as the well-preserved Temple of Hercules, Temple of Concordia and Temple of Juno.
The current old town, which dates back to the Middle-Ages, hosts interesting historic and artistic sights, such as the Abbey of St. Spirito, built in the XIII century and subsequently restored, the Cathedral, erected in the XI century, and the city's entrance gates.
Agrigento also gives visitors the opportunity to discover its ancient customs and traditions attending local festivals and celebrations. The festival dedicated to Saint Calogero, the black Saint, is a charming celebration lasting eight days, from the first to the second Sunday in July. The festivals of Persefone, in June, take place at the Temple of Hera and feature a wide array of classical plays. The Blues & Wine Soul festival, which takes place in July just in the heart of the charming valley, offers tourists the opportunity to taste fine local wines while listening to wonderful music.
