Visiting Tivoli
Tivoli, an ancient village situated in the province of Rome, abounds in tuff and travertine quarries, thermal springs, natural waterways and enchanting fountains dating back to the Roman Age. Thanks to its thermal waters and its privileged position a short distance from Rome, the city hosted many Roman villas, the remains of which bear witness to its past fascination.
People who want to visit the most interesting sights of the city can stay at comfortable 3-star guesthouses and luxury 4-star hotels. The hotels situated in the old town give tourists the possibility to experience a quiet holiday a short distance from Rome. To stay at a hotel situated near Acque Albule spas gives tourists the possibility to combine relaxing holidays with beauty treatments.
Among the main sights are the small village of Tivoli Terme and Hadrian's Villa, one of the largest and most spectacular villas ever built in the Roman Empire. Emperor Hadrian was an inveterate traveller and his aim in creating the villa was to reproduce some of the wonders he had seen around the world. The Villa is Greek influenced, as seen in the main architectural patterns and the names of the palaces it hosts. Although many decorations and sculptures were sacked and excavated by antiquities dealers to be distributed to the major museums in the world, it is still possible to admire the impressive original buildings, the coloured marbles covering the floors, the Oriental-style decorations and stuccos and the bath complexes where steam baths, banquets and further celebrations took place.
The town's most famous sight is the enchanting Villa d’Este, a sumptuous country residence created by Pirro Ligorio for Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, the son of Lucrezia Borgia. Cardinal Ippolito d’Este gathered the most famous artists of the late-Renaissance mannerist style in Tivoli to decorate the inner of the villa, while drawing inspiration from the nearby Hadrian's Villa to create an elaborate fantasy mixture of architectural elements, precious materials and impressive sculptures. It is known primarly for its beautiful Italian Gardens, steeply raked on terraces, and studded with spectacular, if somewhat faded and mosshung, fountains. Both villas were listed among UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Acropoleis, temples dating back to the III and II centuries B.C., ancient aristocratic residences, waterways, grottos and panoramic views are further attractions which make Tivoli a highly appreciated resort.
