Visiting Tempio Pausania
Tempio Pausania, a provincial capital of Sardinia together with the nearby Olbia, is situated in the northern hinterland of the island, on the top of a charming plateau developing on the slopes of Mount Limbara. Together with Olbia, it is the most important centre of the historic territory of the Gallura region. Its raised position overlooking the fascinating granitic mountains of Aggius, famous springs of mineral water and a well-kept old town make Tempio Pausania an appreciated holiday destination.
Tempio Pausania gathers a remarkably wide array of accommodation options: the comfortable 3-star guesthouses of the old town make the ideal base for visiting the city, while luxury 4-star hotels and welcoming holiday farms surrounded by a lush vegetation give tourists the possibility to make the most of their holidays in Sardinia. Intimate bed and breakfasts and budget hotels situated a short distance from the old town give tourists the possibility to spend pleasant holidays here at reasonable prices.
Walking down the streets of the city centre, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy utmost chromatic harmony and admire sober monuments and buildings built in grey granite. The most important monument is the Duomo of St. Pietro, which was erected in ‘400 and subsequently rebuilt in '800, even if the most representative sacred building in Tempio Pausania is the Church of the Rosary, which was realized in the XIII century over the pre-existing Roman temple which probably gave the city its name. The traditional gathering place of both tourists and local inhabitants is the beautiful Piazza Gallura, which is dominated by the XIX-century Town Hall and the Church of the Purgatory, a small building which was commissioned by Spanish invaders together with the Church of Pilar.
Among the major attractions of Tempio Pausania not to be missed are the famous Rinaggiu springs, whose waters (which are low in mineral content) are widely employed in the execution of hydroponic therapies. The most acclaimed local festival is the Carnival, which is celebrated through amazing processions of funny parade floats.
Those interested in the ancient history of the surrounding area can visit the nearby archaeological sites dating back to the II millennium BC. Not to be missed are Maiori Nuraghe, a granitic megalithic monument which was realized by a people whose origins constitute one of the Mediterranean's great mysteries in 1600 BC, and the dolmens of Luras, the most famous of them being the one situated in Ladas.
