Visiting Siena
Siena is renowned all over the world for its charming landscapes of sweet hills and olive groves, the traditional warm hospitality of local inhabitants and its outstanding food and wine traditions. Italy's prettiest medieval town, Siena gathers an inestimable historic and artistic heritage.
Siena gathers a remarkably wide array of accommodation facilities which are able to suit even tourists' most demanding requirements, such as comfortable budget hotels, elegant 3-star guesthouses and luxury 4-star hotels. Not to be missed are family hotels, comfortable accommodation facilities provided with car park and charming holiday farms situated a short distance from the old town.
Siena is still endowed with the grandeur of the age in which it was at its peak. Begin an exploration of its historic centre and the surrounding maze of medieval alleys. Siena's principal sights cluster in the maze of narrow streets and alleys around the fan-shaped Piazza del Campo. One of Europe's greatest medieval squares, the piazza sits at the heart of the city's 17 contrade, a series of parishes whose ancient rivalries are still acted out in the twice-yearly Palio. Loyalty to the contrada of one's birth is fierce, and as you wander the streets you will see the parishes' animal symbols repeated on flags, plaques and carvings.
The square is surrounded by impressive medieval buildings, such as the Gothic terracotta-tiled Palazzo Pubblico, the current seat of the rich collection of the Civic Museum, and the 14th-century Torre del Mangia. A short distance from it is Piazza Duomo, which is dominated by the impressive Cathedral of St. Maria Assunta, one of Italy's greatest cathedrals, a spectacular mixture of sculpture, painting and Pisan-influenced Romanesque-Gothic architecture realized by acclaimed artists, such as Giovanni Pisano and Jacopo della Quercia. Among the Duomo's treasures are sculptural masterpieces by Michelangelo, a fine inlaid pavement, a magnificent fresco cycle by Pinturicchio and further precious artworks by Beccafumi, Bernini and many more. The nearby Baptistry, which was erected in the XIV century, cherishes impressive sculptures by great artists and the most important font by Jacopo della Quercia.
Not to be missed are the inestimable art collections hosted inside the Museum of the Duomo, which is situated next to the Cathedral, and Siena's National Art Gallery, which is housed inside Palazzo Brigici e Buonsignori, a short distance from the 13th-century church of St. Agostino. Those interested in contemporary art will have the opportunity to visit the museums hosted inside the Complex of St. Maria della Scala, which was realized in the 13th century to host the first European hospital and is now the seat of Siena's Centre of Contemporary Art and the interesting Children's Art Museum.
Those looking for pleasant itineraries across the surrounding lush countryside will have the possibility to explore charming footpaths, go for exciting cycle excursions or make outstanding horse rides amidst fairy-tale landscapes. Not to be missed are the nearby charming resorts of Montepulciano and Montalcino and the picturesque villages of the Chianti Hills, which offer tourists delightful hidden corners, countless sudden views and the possibility to taste some of the finest wines in the world.
