Visiting Savona
Savona, a provincial capital of Liguria and a lively seaside resort situated just in the heart of the so-called Riviera of the Palm trees, is an important commercial centre since it hosts Liguria's second largest commercial port and tourist harbour.
A thriving cultural city featuring compelling beaches, clean sea and mild climate, over the last few years Savona has attracted large numbers of enthusiast tourists offering them modern services and well-kept accommodation facilities. The comfortable 3-star guesthouses and elegant 4-star hotels situated along the sea front welcome guests offering them utmost comfort and state-of-the-art services and facilities. Not to be missed are the hotels situated in the old town, a short distance from the most important tourist highlights. Both couples and groups of friends looking for pleasant stays at reasonable prices can take advantage of the budget hotels and bed and breakfasts situated near the Old Basin, the liveliest area of the city which is scattered with funny pubs and clubs and animated by a charming tourist harbour.
Welcoming and well-groomed beaches can be reached on foot, by bike or through free dedicated buses. Among the most appreciated ones are Spiaggia delle Fornaci, which also hosts a wide public beach, Spiaggia della Natarella and Spiaggia di Zinola, the latter being situated just across the western border of the region. The local beach extends for more than one kilometre from the banks of the river Letimbro, which crosses the whole city, up to the so-called Priamar Fortress. Once past the port is a wide expanse of golden beach which snakes along Matteotti Sea Front.
As an alternative to the sea, guests can spend some hours visiting the city centre, which is peppered with important monuments and interesting tourist sights. The gentle hill overlooking the sea is topped by Priamar Fortress, a sixteenth-century castle which was built over the ruins of a Roman oppidum and was subsequently turned into a military prison hosting Giuseppe Mazzini in the nineteenth-century. It is now the venue for interesting displays and exhibitions and houses the Historic Archaeological Museum and the precious “Sandro Pertini” Collection. Walking down the old town, it is possible to visit the Baroque Duomo and the adjoining Museum of the Treasure, which cherishes inestimable works of art, Palazzo della Rovere, which is named after the powerful papal family from Savona and was designed by architect Giuliano da Sangallo, and the historic Via Paleocapa, which connects the central Piazza Mameli with the fourtheenth-century Tower of Leon Pancaldo which commands the whole Port. Via Paleocapa, which gathers glamorous shops and boutiques, is the seat of the enchanting Palazzo dei Pavoni, a remarkable example of Art-nouveau architecture which draws inspiration from the Vienna Secession, and the Civic Picture Gallery which is hosted inside Palazzo Gavotti.
In the evening, clubs, restaurants, pubs and shops which are open till late at night concentrate in the area of the Old Basin, which was renovated in 2001. All year round Palcomare, situated just in the heart of Piazza d’Allaggio, stages absorbing shows, concerts and events for both adults and children, and also arranges great celebrations on the occasion of New Year's Day.
