Sassari, a provincial capital of Sardinia, is sheltered by Nurra, Logudoro and Anglona mountains, and is surrounded by lush green valleys which are carpeted with ancient olive groves. Besides cherishing important collections gathering traditional items, it is also the venue for interesting exhibitions and cultural events.
A short distance from the Public Gardens is the Church of St. Pietro di Silki, which still retains parts of the original XII-century structure, while the facade and the outstanding wooden high altar were realized in the XVII century in the Baroque style. The impressive Cathedral of St. Nicola, an ancient church which was repeatedly renovated but still retains its wonderful Baroque facade, is situated just in the heart of the city centre. To the north is the huge Fontana di Rossello, Sassari's most representative landmark. Erected just in the heart of Monte Rossello district in the early seventeenth century, it is the only late-Renaissance fountain in Sardinia.
