San Giovanni Rotondo is a small municipality situated in the province of Foggia which is famous all over the world as the city where the Capuchin Friar Padre Pio lived and died. It is named after the round building which stood in the current Piazza del Carmine, around which the first local inhabitants gathered in the III century  B.C. to venerate Janus, the god of gates.  When converting the city, Christians turned it into the Church of St. John the Baptist, a round building embellished with medieval frescoes.
Every year, millions of visitors flocking to the city can enjoy the mild climate and lush vegetation of San Giovanni Rotondo, which is part of Gargano National Park, as well as its picturesque old town situated on the top of a cliff overlooking the enchanting gulf of Manfredonia and the numerous places of worship which attract pilgrims from all over the world all year round.

Next to the main monuments and churches of the ancient village are small inns and cheap guesthouses too.

The religious itinerary of San Giovanni Rotondo includes numerous stops, such as the XVI-century Monastery of the Friars Minor Capuchin, where Padre Pio lived, which hosts the cell cherishing outstanding memorabilia, the nearby Ancient Church of St. Maria delle Grazie, where the friar received Visible Stigmata, the Sanctuary of St. Maria delle Grazie, which cherishes his crypt, the Monumental Stations of the Cross, built in 1968 and made up of 14 bronze stations by sculptor Francesco Messina, 152 stairs and a large square overlooking a breathtaking landscape.
A short distance from the old town, south of the monastery, is the new church of St. Pio da Pietrelcina, designed by the famous architect Renzo Piano, a big contemporary building which is able to host more than 10.000 pilgrims and is easily accessible from the main hotels in San Giovanni Rotondo.
