Visiting Rieti
Rieti was called Umbilicus Italiae, since it was situated just in the heart of the Italian Peninsula. Although such a statement is no longer true, Piazza San Rufo, inside the city walls, is still regarded to be the centre of Italy,
as evidenced by the round monument called “la caciotta” it cherishes. The city is idyllically set amongst charming plateaux situated just in the heart of the Reatina Valley, the latter commanding a wide plain dominated by Mount Terminillo.
Visitors flocking to Rieti can enjoy a wide variety of itineraries and accommodation facilities. The hotels situated on the slopes of Mount Terminillo provide mountain lovers comfortable accommodation at reasonable prices. The old town abounds in comfortable 3-star hotels and welcoming cheap guesthouses, but also hosts luxury 4-star hotels overlooking the most beautiful squares of the city.
A traditional tourist attraction in Rieti are the four Franciscan Sanctuaries: Fonte Colombo, Foresta, Greccio and Poggio Bustone, which hosted the Saint during his wanderings. The itinerary extends along the ancient Salaria consular road, which connected Rome with Rieti crossing the Reatina Valley for about 80 kilometres. The lovers of nature can make wonderful excursions across the Natural Reserve of Lakes Lungo and Ripasottile, the remains of the ancient Lake Velino.
Rieti's charming old town attracts large numbers of visitors. The well-preserved Medieval walls are punctuated with impressive entrance gates, such as Porta Romana, Porta d'Arci, Porta Aringo, Porta Conca and Porta Cintia. Inside the city walls are plenty of evidences dating back to different ages, such as the Roman Bridge crossing the River Velino, the Romanesque Cathedral of St. Mary, the Medieval Bishop's Palace and the Diocesan Museum of sacred art, which cherishes important works of art, frescos and sculptures. The remains of the ancient Via Salaria are cherished in the cellars of the buildings overlooking Via Roma, the city's major arterial route. Walking down the 2-kilometre-long ancient path which led to Rome, it is possible to reach fonte Cottorella, the source of Rieti's curative water which was discovered during the Roman Age.
