The tour of the old town could start from the central Piazza Prampolini and the imposing Duomo, which was erected in the XIII century but subsequently remodelled during the following centuries. On January 7, 1797, the tricolour was chosen as the symbol of the Cispadane Republic. Some decades later, it became the official Italian flag.
Behind the Duomo is the 16th-century Church of St. Prospero, which features richly decorated interiors. A short distance from it along Corso Garibaldi is the church of Madonna della Ghiara, whose interior is embellished by great masterpieces, such as a Christ on the Cross by Guercino.
Piazza Cavour leads to the Municipal Theatre and the lush gardens of Parco del Popolo. A short distance from the park are the Parmeggiani Gallery, which gathers important paitings by Spanish, Flemish and Italian artists and a rich collection of weapons, fabrics, costumes and jewellery, and the Civic Museums.
A three-kilometre-long walk along Via Aemilia, in the direction of Modena, gives tourists the possibility to reach the villa where Ludovico Ariosto lived and worked, the so-called  Mauriziano. It gathers richly decorated rooms embellished by precious poet portraits realized by acclaimed artists belonging to the 16th-century School of Modena. Not to be missed is the visit to the castles of the surrounding area, which once belonged to Matilde di Canossa. The tour of the castles is an outstanding journey across fascinating places and medieval profusion.
Not to be missed are traditional specialities from Reggio Emilia, such as Parmesan cheese, Lambrusco wine and balsamic vinegar.
