Visiting Putignano
The ancient city of Putignano, which is situated just in the heart of the hilly landscape of Bari's hinterland, is renowned all over the world for its thriving manufacturing industry, karstic caves and Carnival, the latter attracting large numbers of tourists every year.
Carnival celebrations are inaugurated by the so-called "Layer rite" on December 26, when local poets dedicate satirical verses to the most illustrious local citizens, and go on with fancy-dress parades livened up by allegorical floats which take place in the last three weeks of Carnival and on Shrove Tuesday.
On the occasion of Carnival celebrations, large numbers of visitors stay at 3-star guesthouses and beautiful 4-star hotels hosted inside the fine buildings of the city centre. To stay at a hotel in Putignano situated just in the heart of the old town gives tourists the possibility to enjoy the liveliness of both the city and its inhabitants. Both in spring and in summer, the lush countrysides and hilly landscapes of the surrounding area are ideal holiday destinations, since they are scattered with charming bed and breakfasts and fascinating holiday farms.
Not to be missed in Putignano are its famous caves. The fascinating “Cave of the trullo”, which had been hollowed out by the water, develops under a small complex of trulli situated few hundred metres far from the city centre. Those interested in history and religion won't miss the opportunity to visit the caves of San Michele in Monte Laureto, which gather outstanding frescos, altars and a statue built by Stefano da Putignano in the XVI century, and the cave of Madonna delle Grazie, situated just in the heart of the nearby thick wood.
The old town too is scattered with churches and important religious buildings. Not to be missed is Chiesa Matrice di San Pietro, which boasts a fifteenth-century facade and hosts important sculptures by Stefano da Putignano, the most famous Renaissance sculptor from Apulia. Walking down the narrow streets of the city centre, tourists will have the possibility to admire outstanding ancient palaces characterized by enchanting inner courtyards.
