Piombino, the most important city in Cornia Valley, in the province of Livorno, is situated on the homonymous promontory overlooking the Tyrrhenian Coast. The top of Piombino's promontory is dominated by the Castle, a Medicean fortress which was used as a prison up to 1960 and is now the seat of the Museum of the City.
