Hotels Piombino, Guesthouses Piombino and Residences Piombino
Visiting Piombino
Piombino, the most important city in Cornia Valley, in the province of Livorno, is situated on the homonymous promontory overlooking the Tyrrhenian Coast. Its Canal is the major landing place to the Elba Island. Piazza Bovio, situated just in the heart of Piombino's city centre, offers tourists the possibility to enjoy a fascinating view over the surrounding landscape, thanks to its lookout point built on the top of an impressive rock spur overlooking the whole Tuscan Archipelago and the Corsica Island.
The guesthouses by the sea in Piombino snake along the promenades which connect the city centre with the beaches situated south and west. Here are luxury 4-star hotels provided with wide panoramic terraces overlooking the coast, equipped 3-star guesthouses and hotels provided with swimming pool and surrounded by the lush vegetation of the promontory. People looking for hotels designed to host cycle tourists can choose among a wide range of accommodation facilities situated a short distance from the natural Parks which surround the city, while cheap hotels allow guests to spend wonderful seaside holidays at reasonable prices.
The crystal-clear sea of Piombino laps against a long intended coast. North is the famous beach of Baratti, surrounded by ancient pines and characterized by glittering metal microparticles which originate from iron manufacturing, the major industry of the country since the Etruscan Age. The most accessible and best-equipped coastal areas are situated east, featuring soft, white beaches and safe shallow waters which are suitable for the bathing of children too. Not far from here are unspoiled public beaches, a lush vegetation and shaded pinewood forests. The central coast hosts the Coastal Park of Sterpaia and the WWF Protected Area of Orti Bottagone situated in the hinterland, the latter attracting the lovers of birdwatching since teeming with flamingos, storks, herons and stilt plovers. The coastal area between Piombino and Populonia features intimate wild coves to be reached by sea. Here beaches of fine polychromatic gravel and rocky shoal are a perfect combination for the lovers of diving and fishing .
The lovers of outdoor pursuits can hire specific equipment to perform water sports, make long excursions, cycle across the hinterland or ride in the lush protected areas which surround Piombino's city centre.
The countryside gives gourmets the possibility to taste local products. The hinterland is crossed by the Wine Route of the Etruscan Coast, which abounds in wine cellars, trattorias and wine industries where the DOC wines of Cornia Valley are produced.
The lovers of cultural tourism can make interesting historic and artistic tours across the city centre. These tours could start with the visit of the ancient Sant’Antonio door, the historic entrance gate to the city, which dates back to 1212 and was later restored in 1447 with the building of the so-called Rivellino. Other attractions worthy of note are Piazza Bovio, dominated by the Lighthouse, and Piazzetta dei Grani, situated a short distance from the ancient harbour and Fonti di Marina, decorated with a fine bas-relief by Nicola Pisano. Piazza Desideri leads tourists to the Cathedral of St. Antimo, provided with an impressive fourteenth-century brick facade which was erected to host the mortal remains of the Lords of Piombino, the Appiani family, and which cherishes important artworks by Andrea Gualdi. The top of Piombino's promontory is dominated by the Castle, a Medicean fortress which was used as a prison up to 1960 and is now the seat of the Museum of the City.
